Best Places to Live in Papua New Guinea

Port Moresby (NCD)

Town/Ela Beach/Harbour City/Konedobu are among the most sought-after areas thanks to proximity to offices, the waterfront and 24/7 security around major complexes. Korobosea and parts of Boroko East remain popular for families. Many residents choose gated options such as Edai Town (north-west of the city), and well-managed compounds/apartment blocks around Ela Beach, Harbour City and Waigani—these typically provide guards, access control, and backups for water/power.

Kokopo (East New Britain)

Often cited as one of PNG’s calmest towns, Kokopo has cleaner streets, good markets, and a slower pace. Areas near the town centre, Takubar and Kenabot are popular, and many houses sit in securely fenced lots.

Alotau (Milne Bay)

A laid-back coastal town known for island access and friendly communities. Choose homes close to the main town and stick to well-lit streets; compounds near the waterfront and government precincts are preferred.

Goroka (Eastern Highlands)

Cool climate, universities and hospitals make Goroka attractive. West Goroka and established residential pockets around town are common picks; many families opt for fenced properties or small compounds.

Madang & Kavieng

Madang is scenic with coastal living; look for secure compounds around Newtown/Modilon Road and be cautious at night. Kavieng (New Ireland) offers quiet island life—homes near town or resort belts are popular and typically peaceful.

Lae (Morobe)

PNG’s industrial hub can be riskier in parts; residents commonly prefer well-managed compounds (Top Town/Coronation Drive corridors) with guards and controlled access, and avoid walking after dark.
